Five Years of Bliss!

Aww, look at us all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed...

It's been five years since that fateful day, and I can honestly say that it's absolutely been the best five years of my life! I won't get too mushy-gushy on you, but suffice it to say that having a husband who's not only a soul mate, but who also refills your fancy olive oil dispenser and changes every single clock in the house during daylight savings time (including the one in your car) because you hate doing those things is clearly a keeper. I left out the other million things he does and is, of course, but you get the idea.

One of the things he did this past week was take Friday off so we could celebrate our five years of bliss in Downtown Denver sans kids (thank you, thank you, THANK YOU wonderful in-laws of mine for making that possible)! We kicked off the night watching the sunset together from our mountain-view suite...

Ordered champagne...

...got gussied up without any interruptions (I forgot how quickly you can get ready when you have no one else to dress!) and went to dinner here for an Italian feast of lamb and veal (I highly recommend it to our fellow Denverites)! We also got a fabulous surprise when we went to pay the bill...apparently my parents (who had lots of rather specific questions about where we were going to eat but I assumed were just being nosy because we're Italian and our family eats, lives, and breathes real Italian cooking) actually had ulterior motives...they called ahead and made a (not-so-) little contribution! Thanks again, you guys...even though you're still in trouble!

We closed out the night with a visit to a local photography gallery and topped it off with dessert and drinks at the hotel restaurant and bar. The next morning we slept in til nine (!!!!!!!!!), caught brunch at another great joint, then spent the rest of our special day with our beautiful kiddos.

In the past few years I've wanted to put my wedding dress back on for fun at some point--I've always loved my dress (especially since I had it made and even got to help design it!) but have always been some combination of pregnant or too busy with babies to bother trying it back on. But our five year celebration presented the perfect opportunity dig it out again and capture this awesome picture (I got the idea from a friend who took a picture in her dress holding her two girls!). I also did a few other things I never expected to do in a wedding dress: unload the dishwasher, chase a toddler, and vote (at home, filling out my mail-in ballot...I didn't leave the house in it)!

Five years (and loads of blessings!) later...

Overall it was just a fabulous weekend celebrating the beautiful gift of our marriage. It doesn't take much reflection to see that our union is a special one; though we are both imperfect in many ways, we are absolutely perfect for each other. Through all of the uninterrupted conversations this weekend and time reconnecting with my amazing husband, I was reminded of all the reasons I fell in love with him in the first place so many years ago, along with all of the reasons I continue to fall more in love with him every day--and I just cannot wait to experience all of the many ways I will continue to love him more fully in the future!

I love you, Peter!

7 Quick Takes Friday - Can't Make This Stuff Up!

1.
It's never easy to know what to say or do for someone going through a tragedy. Prayer is always good, but if possible it should also be supplemented with direct action. For the last guest post of my "How to Help a Hurting Friend" series over at Ms.MommyHH6, some amazing women whose husbands were injured or killed in combat have contributed to share what helped them the most during their darkest days. Although it was written for the benefit of military moms, their advice provides an incredible perspective on how to best help anyone whose life has suddenly been turned upside down. So I highly encourage you to read what they have to say!

2.
Still praying like crazy for all of those affected by Sandy. I saw this amazing picture the other day--a little ray of hope in a sea of absolute devastation...
Another shocking photo of the debris left by fires in Breezy Point, Queens
credit: http://www.buzzfeed.com/ryanhatesthis/29-breathtaking-photos-of-hurricane-sandy-devastat
Location: Breezy Point where the fire ripped through Queens...

3.
On a lighter note, I am so thankful that my amazing family/extended family in Pennsylvania weathered the storm well and are doing just fine!

4.
Yesterday as my just-turned-one-year-old was rambling toward me I saw something suspicious in his mouth. I assumed he was eating a piece of old food...it was only after doing the finger sweep as usual to see what was in there that I realized I was extracting a piece of poop. Poop, people. In my son's mouth. Naturally, he screamed like a wild banshee when I took it away from him. After sanitizing safely washing out his mouth and doing a little scavenger hunt I surmised that it was part of a larger nugget located by the toy box that somehow fell out of his diaper/pant leg after he did his business. You seriously can't make this stuff up. Please tell me God gives extra credit for things like this!

5.
Perfect for number five: this weekend we get to celebrate five years of wedded bliss! Not only do we get to celebrate it together this year (hooray for no more Army!), but we also get to get 'away' for the first time EVER together since we had kids (which equates to the first time since our honeymoon). It's only a little staycation, but we're excited as can be. And absolutely blessed as can be...you know the whole "we fall more in love with each other every day" cliché? We are definitely living it!

6.
My husband dedicated himself to teaching the kids how to sing "Shabooya Roll Call" last night. As I said on FB, I foresee a lot of interesting looks the next time we're out in public. But those looks are a lot more fun to imagine after watching this footage...

23 seconds of hilarity!

7.
I would be remiss if I didn't post at least one sweet Halloween picture of the kids! Peter had class (I guess grad students are too cool to celebrate Halloween) but my Mother-in-Law came over for some Pumpkin soup and went trick-or-treating with us. The kids had fun, and so did I--meeting at least one of my Make it Count Monday goals for this week! I actually stepped it up a notch (for me at least) and put on some cat ears and painted my face for the day as a kitty. The kids loved it, and I enjoyed feeling slightly whimsical for the day!

Trick or treat!

Happy November Friday, all!
(November...aie!)

The Newest ONE YEAR OLD on the Block!

Somehow, all of a sudden even though I've known it was coming and tried to prepare myself like a mother ostrich by burying my head in the sand, my baby boy turned one yesterday. Words are lost on me when attempting to describe the momentousness of this occasion, so we'll just take a little trip down memory lane instead:

Brand new little Ethan man

Months 1-4

Months 5-8

Months 9-12

And there you have it--one whole year of unbelievably adorable awesomeness!

Happy (Halloween) Birthday,
little cowboy!
In the past month our little man has been pretty busy developing his personality and learning how to interact like a big boy. Every morning on the way downstairs for breakfast, we stop and look at the gallery wall in our stairwell. He gets super excited and practically squirms out of my arms trying to look at the pictures of each family member. He loves pointing everyone out and saying "Mommy!" and "Daddy!" about a million times. He hasn't quite mastered Marie and Erik's names on his own, but will repeat them, and will point out the "doggie!" with excitement every time he sees Samson. (Poor Samson usually makes a quick escape to avoid getting his tail yanked). His other favorite words are "ball," "uh-oh," and "more." He spends most meals devouring whatever we put in front of him and demanding "more! more!" so often that we can't keep up with him! I taught him baby signs for a few words such as 'more,' 'please,' and 'thank you,' but he happened to start saying the word 'more' at the same time he started signing it, so it's also funny to hear him make his demands while frantically clapping his hands together, too. He also does a funny little shuffle/run now instead of just walking, and has mastered going both up and down the stairs...I remember Marie still learning how to do this at 14 months, so it's crazy to see how much sooner Ethan picks it all up after watching big brother and sister!

And now, for your viewing pleasure:

Trying to escape from getting his PJs on one night as I chased after him...toddling like a champ and saying 'uh-oh' and 'ball!'

Demanding 'more' pancakes (Daddy makes some really yummy Saturday morning breakfasts)!

Taking the gallery wall quiz! (Sorry for the horrible filmography...it's surprisingly tough to film a child you happen to be holding)!

Yesterday, on Ethan's actual birthday, we celebrated with a Halloween birthday party (I embraced the fact that decorations would be easy to find) and dressed the little man up as a cowboy for his first taste chocolate cake. He was surprisingly tidy with the first piece since he didn't want to waste a crumb, and immediately made his demands for "more!" cake. The second round was slightly messier, but there still wasn't much left. Guess we have another chocolate hound in the family! Now for the rest of those pictures and videos I know you're dying to see:

Pumpkin pull-apart cupcake cake! Since I
surprisingly couldn't find any good tutorials,
(Pinterest, you have failed me!) here's a tip: put
cupcake papers on a cookie sheet instead of in a
muffin tin; the batter will spread out when
baking, resulting in nice flat cupcakes!
Hurry up with the cake, Mom!

Woah. This chocolate stuff is amazing.

Why is everybody singing? And why can't you just take a hint and give me that cupcake already, Mom? I'm about to fall out of my high chair trying to get it!

No good smash cake moments since it all went straight in the mouth...but he started to get a little messier on his second cupcake!

Happy birthday sweet little (big) boy...it's been an amazing year watching you grow and we can't wait to see what the next one brings!

7 Quick Takes Friday - 'Becoming a Sharpie Removal Expert' Edition

1.
I know, I know, I said I moved all Sharpies out of reach after our last little incident. But my daughter still likes to cross the days off of the calendar so I decided to let her continue--supervised of course--since it's a good learning tool for mastering dates and days of the week and all those wonderful things her little brain is soaking up. Well, I turned around for two seconds (famous last words) to update their chore chart, and while I was standing literally two feet away, she proceeded to decorate her ruffly pink skirt with the Sharpie. So, my friends, I present Installment #2 of the series "I learned the hard way how to get permanent maker out of  [insert blank]."  In the case of clothing? Rubbing alcohol! Which I'd randomly just bought a big jug of and had sitting on the counter. (God and His sense of humor again)?
                        Step 1: Lay clothing-item-turned-artwork face-down on a paper towel.
Step 2: Douse with rubbing alcohol, and the ink will begin to transfer to the paper towel.
Step 3: Rub affected areas with a finger or soft cloth and keep pouring until it has completely
                                    faded.
Step 4: Open all the windows and gasp for air because the entire house reeks of alcohol.
Also wash the salvaged item of clothing and congratulate yourself on your handiwork.

2.
I love fall, I'm a sucker for pumpkin everything, and I love that Halloween kicks off a holiday season that lasts all the way until January. But you know what I don't love? Super creepy Halloween decorations. I get it, it's fun to get spooked out once in awhile, especially as a kid, but this year especially it seems like I can't even find any suitable Halloween decorations in your everyday craft store...nothing cutesy or fun at all. And it's not even that they're just a little scary or spooky; it all seems to be deliberately morbid. I don't want to terrify little children with half-buried bones sticking out of my front lawn, even if they are fake. I tried to find stickers for kids but all I could find in most stores were ones with decaying skulls with worms crawling out of them, jack o'lanterns that looked downright evil, and severed fingers and bloody eyeballs. Not something I want to give my toddler! Whatever happened to the friendly ghosts and cute bats and little spiders? I get Halloween, but I just don't get what seems to be an increasing obsession with the darkness of death. It disturbs me greatly. Guess that's why All Saint's Day directly follows Halloween...to offer a little redemption!

3.
On a lighter note, since I couldn't find any decorations to suit my taste, I took matters into my own hands:

How adorable is this guy?!
Look! We actually used the Sharpie correctly!
We have two more to add, but this cute little 'family' of
ghosts will eventually all go on the front porch with
Christmas lights running through cut-outs in the back.
Thank you, Pinterest!

Bows to dress up the garage lights!
For the adorable lawn ghost, I found a tutorial here. It called for some tulle and a big Styrofoam ball, which I didn't have (and didn't feel like buying) so I just used a white sheet from our closet and a stuffed a bunch of newspaper into plastic grocery bags to form a waterproof ball for the head. Tomato cages were out of season, but my in-laws had an extra one, and I just used some ribbon I already had lying around the house. I also cut wire coat hangers instead of buying floral picks to stake it into the ground. Total cost: $0.29 for the black felt that I used for the eyes. Not too shabby!

4.
Yesterday as I was buckling big brother into his car seat, my baby boy looked over at me from his car seat, pointed to my face, and exclaimed in his sweet little voice, "MOMmy!" while grinning ear to ear. It's the first time I've seen him deliberately make the connection that 'that woman' = 'my mommy' and call me by name. Nothing in the world could melt this mama's heart any more!

5.
That same little "baby" boy of mine turns ONE on Sunday!!! Gah. That is all.
Wearing his cereal
and loving it!

6.
this is me!
I sure can!

7.
Love me some Plumb! Especially their new song:

7 Quick Takes Friday - 'If You Give a Kid a Sharpie' Edition

~1~
I learned not too long ago when Googling "remove permanent marker from whiteboard" that the solution is even more magic than a Magic Eraser. You simply color over the errant Sharpie marks with a dry erase marker, and--voila--it wipes off effortlessly! I was delighted to learn this since my kids had just confused the Sharpie and the dry erase marker and I thought our activity board was surely ruined forever. I was even more delighted to have learned this little trick when my three-year-old son decided to color on the side of the pantry cabinet with the very same Sharpie. But I was most happy to possess such a valuable nugget of info when our dear daughter (who is four and very well knows better) decided to color all over my computer screen and keyboard yesterday with--you guessed it--the fated Sharpie. I'm not sure why it took me so long, but there are no longer any Sharpies in within reach of persons shorter than five feet.

~2~
This past Sunday was pretty life-changing; with just 26.2 Random Acts of Kindness we gained a whole new outlook on life. Not too shabby!

~3~
Four-year-old Marie came down early from nap yesterday and caught me eating pretzels and Nutella before I could hide the jar. "What's that, Mommy?" she asked. "Mommy's special snack." I answered. "May I have some of that chocolate snack, Mommy?" she asked. "No, not today," I answered. "How about when I'm seven?" she asked. (Three years...reasonable enough). "Sure, when you're seven," I said. "How about when I'm five or four and a half?" (She's got this bargaining thing down to a science). "Well, when you're five is fine too. But not four and a half," I said, lest she claim that she was already four and a half. "Oh. Well okay. I guess when I'm five or seven," she sighed despondently. It was in that instant that I realized the power of Nutella over me.

~4~
It was also in that instant I realized I embodied this meme to a tee:
Hee hee;-)

~5~
Our beloved old house has been on the market now for almost nine months. In that time, we've moved across the country, found a new home, left the military, started new jobs, ushered in spring, summer, and fall, watched our babies turn into toddlers and our toddlers turn into big kids...all while our house has done...nothing. (Well, it got a new roof and briefly had the hopes of some would-be new owners before they backed out). So as much as I'm ignoring the fact that it's getting rather stressful, I'm have a hard time ignoring that it's getting r a t h e r  s t r e s s f u l. More interest lately has our hopes up, but that mortgage payment is still ours. So, would you, could you please (pretty pretty please) say a little prayer (like right now) that the right family comes along very very soon to make it theirs? Thanks, that would be super awesome of you.

~6~
Attempting to load or unload the dishwasher with a fearless almost-one-year-old running amok is like trying to guard a grove of banana trees from a herd of starving monkeys.

~7~
But that same fearlessly charming almost-one-year-old is absolutely irresistible, especially in a pumpkin patch.

7 Quick Takes Friday-Escape Artist Edition!

Linking Up for the first time for 7 Quick Takes Friday, hosted by Jen over at Conversion Diary! I've enjoyed reading others'  Quick Takes for quite a while and decided to finally post my own. Here goes:

1.
Strangely reminiscent of
80s-style eyeshadow
Our streak of kid-cidents continues. After the cut on our daughter's right eye from the baby gate finally started healing, she decided to start the week off right and decorate the other eye by literally butting heads with her brother. First black eye: check. Then I had the pleasure of fishing a cell phone out of the toilet after my sweet daughter dropped it in there (thankfully it was an old 'play' phone). Even more exciting was my call to Poison Control yesterday when the baby got the lid off of my skin toner and tried to drink it. While I was in the same room, mind you. (For your information, Clinique Clarifying Lotion is not, in fact, poisonous, and he is a-ok). Also, this walking, talking, climbing 11-month-old of mine is a trained escape artist. Having been through this stage already with his big sister and brother, you'd think I'd be ready for him. But he is in a class of his own. Each diaper change is an epic battle, no matter how much I tighten the high chair straps (without cutting off his circulation), and he continues to somehow wriggle out enough kneel, stand up, turn around, and attempt to climb out. This morning he pulled out all of the stops and escaped from his crib--I found him screaming next to the door. On a side note, the little guy has developed the adorable habit of saying 'uh-oh!' when he drops something on the floor. I wonder if he had the guts to say it when he dropped himself on to the floor. After thoroughly inspecting him he appears to be just fine, but just as determined to not stay put if it's against his agenda. When I told my husband about this incident he said, "well hopefully it's just a one-time deal, but if he tries it at nap I'll pick up an electric fence on my way home."  Right. I have seen those crib nets, but I'm not totally convinced that they'd work on this crazy guy. I just can't believe it because he's not even one yet--suggestions needed! (Please!!!)

2.
Did you know that October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month? You might be surprised to learn that child loss--miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death--are far more common than we would like to think. So spread the word and help celebrate all of our beautiful children! Also, if you or someone you know has experienced any kind of loss, take some time this month to reach out and offer support, or take time for yourself to do something in honor of your child(ren).

3.
Colorado weather is something else. On Tuesday it was over 80 degrees. Today we woke up to our first snow! Just a dusting, but snow nonetheless. My four-year-old daughter ran around the house yelling, "Mommy! There's snow in the backyard! Winter is here and Fall is over!" Thankfully, it's supposed to be in the 70s again soon, because I'm NOT ready for fall to be over when it's just begun!

4.
Cold weather and snow make for a very frisky puppy!

5.
Speaking of warm weather, when it was 80 degrees on Tuesday I discovered one of my new favorite places in the Denver area! We were meeting friends to celebrate and learn about our Guardian Angels on Guardian Angel Day, and one friend suggested we meet at the 'heavenly' Hudson Gardens. We made an angel craft and then explored--they have a breathtaking rose garden, "Monet's Place" which includes a graceful arching bridge over a pond of lily pads and willows, and a frog pond with huge tadpoles and more lily pads, and every plant, tree, and flower is labeled (for us amateurs who don't have a clue!). Turns out it was also the perfect place for Ann Romney to be that day--as I drove in they asked if I was there for the Ann Romney event, and throughout the morning they were setting up tents and blocking off various areas. Pretty crazy! At any rate, it was an amazing place and I can't wait to go back!

6.
Did I mention that they also had a pumpkin patch with the biggest pumpkins I've ever seen?

7.
Here's to fall sticking around for much (much MUCH) longer!

BONUS TAKE:
Just couldn't take it anymore!

HAPPY FALL FRIDAY, EVERYONE!

11 Months!

So I have been having to write WAY too many of these "my kid is big" posts lately. Anyway, I will refrain today from nauseatingly repetitive lamentations about where has the time has gone, blah blah blah. Because I will be using that in force exactly 30 days from now. Just know that this is the last time I will get measure the age of my "baby" in ONLY months instead of years and months. And that is a big.big.deal.

On to the fun stuff:

Walking fool...

Little maestro...

How big is Ethan? SOOO big!

That look that says, "I can't
believe you're telling me 'no' again!
And childproofing these cabinets
was SO CRUEL, mom. You don't
even know!"
...and just being the adorable little
heart-stealer that he is...
(and saving that Goldfish
crumb for later)

See ya when
I'm ONE!!!

So When Did This Guy...

So when did this guy...

Become this guy?!?

That's all I'd like to know today.

I could write a book about all we've been through in these short three years, my little Ookie Doo (and yes, you will always be stuck with that nickname) but I think I'll wait till I have some more really good stories to add to the saga of the lucky penny. Until then, I'm so thankful for the three years you've given me of running and chasing after you, kissing your boo-boos, watching your love of trash trucks and ditchdiggers blossom, playing catch, talking about the dinosaurs with you every night before bed, and all the crashing, growling, tackling, and mud-slinging in between. I love to hear your sweet little voice singing your bedtime song with me, and you have no idea how much I cherish every last hug and kiss you still want to give me, because I know the day is coming when you'll be too cool for that stuff. The couch, my back, and my heart will never be the same because of you, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Happy birthday, little buddy--I love you with all of my everything!

This, Too Shall Pass--LITERALLY!

There are so many things I could have titled this post:
A Penny For Your Thoughts, He's a Little Runaway, An Unintended Lesson In Oxidation, Why the Piggy Bank is Now in Exile, The Least-Desired but Most-Anticipated Birthday Gift Ever...I could go on.

Curious yet?

Let's just say I had the most interesting 'end' to my work-week and start to my (birthday) weekend ever. It all started when I was dutifully making dinner and waiting patiently for my loving husband to get home after the end of a longer-than-usual week with the kids. To their credit, at the moment all three kids were playing ever-so-angelically in the family room. Or so I thought, until I heard the office door slam and discovered that my son--our beloved middle child who loves to fly under the radar--had instead been silently making mischief in daddy's off-limits work space. Now, as an almost-three-year-old boy, that mischief could amount to just about anything. (His most recent contribution was some wall-art all over the house--again--thankfully only in pencil. But it still means grinding a few jumbo erasers into stubs to return the wall to its proper color). So I reluctantly plopped the baby in his high chair with some crackers for safety's sake and abandoned the boiling pot of pasta on the stove to run to the office to see what was amiss, imagining all the while things like diploma frames or computers screens that could be lying shattered on the office floor. Blessedly, it took me but a minute to confirm that other than the little American flag my son had stolen from the pencil holder to wave around, there was no damage.

But in that minute (and when I say a minute, I mean less than 60 seconds because I know better than to leave the kids unattended by now), I emerged to find this sight in the family room:

The fact that my oldest was reading her favorite books nicely in the corner while my son stood guiltily by clearly highlighted the culprit. With a sigh of defeated exasperation as I glanced from the dangling curtain rod to the pot of pasta on the stove that was starting to boil over, I swallowed my anger, picked up the little mischief-maker, and marched him up to his room for a time-out behind the kiddie gate (a practice I had to adopt lest I do something much more rash in my seething rage). Then, as any devoted wife and homemaker would, I ran back downstairs, made sure the baby wasn't choking on all the crackers he'd stuffed in his mouth at once, saved the pasta, and left my husband to deal with our little re-decorator and the broken curtain rod when he got home.

A few minutes later I heaved a sigh of relief as I beheld my husband's handsome face and told him how glad I was to see him. (I was also very much looking forward to some quiet time, as he so wonderfully promised to take the kids with him to get my birthday cake from the ice cream store so I could relax!). I filled him in on his super fun to-do list, and he cheerfully said he'd go talk to our son and bring him back downstairs in time for dinner.

But as I dished out dinner, my husband returned with a look on his face that was anything but cheerful. "So, I went to talk to Erik," he said calmly, "and he told me he swallowed a penny from his piggy bank." I about dropped the pot of pasta on my foot. "He WHAT?! Oh. my. goodness." After confirming that our little guy was still acting just fine, we decided that I'd be the one to Google "what do I do, my kid swallowed a penny," omitting the implied, "because I am Mother of the Year," of course.

Now in case you've never had the pleasure yourself, I'll also let you know how very humbling it is to call your doctor's after-hours cell phone, on a Friday night, knowing that he is at home with his own children, and fully comprehends that you are Mother of the Year. He very kindly told me that unless our son was exhibiting signs of distress or trouble swallowing, the penny was probably already in his stomach and should pass within a few days. Trip to the ER averted, I gratefully hung up the phone, resigned myself to fishing through dirty diapers for a penny for the next week or so, and sat down to dinner with the rest of the family--including Disappearing Penny Man, who was eating most eagerly. I breathed another sigh of relief (I should have known better!) and we decided that we'd make it a family trip to the ice cream store and get some much-needed ice cream stress therapy while picking up my cake.

My loving husband got the kids ready while I chimed in every few minutes to direct our wandering and distracted middle child toward his shoes and the garage. In no time at all, my husband informed me that all the kids were packed up in the car, and I ran upstairs to grab a jacket as I dreamed of all the toppings that might grace my ice cream...marshmallows...pretzels...Reese's...wait a minute, why is the front door open?  The kids were supposed to go through the garage. But I knew that penny boy had also developed a recent fetish with only wanting to use the front door...And the storm door isn't latched, either...oh no. NO! Not the dog! "Samson? Samson!! Samson, come here, boy!!!" I called frantically. But alas, our behemoth white polar bear of a dog was gone. So much for those ice cream toppings.
Sorry, Mom. I didn't mean to.
Well actually I kinda did...
I yelled to my husband, and in a matrix-like exchange he tossed me the keys as I tossed him the leash, and the search party began: my husband on foot, and me with an SUV full of kids a-chatter, excitedly peppering me with question after question about their missing dog. I peeled around the corner toward the main road, praying that the dog had enough sense to go the opposite direction of the four-lane road near our house. As I crawled along the shoulder with all the windows down, calling our dog's name like a maniac, I happened to glance at the clock. And in the middle of all the madness, I couldn't help but laugh piteously at the realization that all of this had happened in less than an hour. Then I sobered up and prayed to God again that our dog wasn't someone's bumper decoration. When the phone rang a moment later I stifled another sigh of relief and whipped the car around as my husband gasped from the other end that he'd spotted the dog peeing on someone's peonies and was running toward him. We turned back into the neighborhood just in time to witness my husband, shirt tail awry, tackling our dog at a full sprint. It was NFL-worthy.

Thankfully, that was the last big addition to the Friday night shenanigans. We did finally make it to the ice cream store after barricading the dog behind locked doors and lecturing our absent-minded penny miser for the fifteenth time about keeping the front door locked and closed. The double chocolate ice cream with Twix bits that I ordered was heavenly. The penny-ingester had no qualms about ingesting copious amounts of ice cream, too. I picked out a delectable-looking ice cream cake for our celebration the next day (since my Sunday birthday was chock full of other commitments on the calendar). Then my husband fixed the broken curtain rod and we hid the piggy banks until the kids turn 18. The next day brought more welcome stress relief. We spent a perfectly lovely and more importantly uneventful Saturday as a family hanging out at the park feeding the ducks; then after cake with the in-laws, my husband and I got to join our friends for a much-needed night out sans kids!

Birthday date night! Sheesh, we needed that!
(Notice the repaired curtain rod!)
No pennies surfaced on Saturday, but as Sunday morning dawned beautiful, bright and sunny--the perfect day for a birthday--a suspicious odor wafted from my son's diaper to my nose. I shuddered to think of the not-so-shiny birthday present that might be awaiting me. Sure enough, as I opened the diaper to behold the stomach-turning contents (you know how copper turns green when exposed to the elements? Apparently the contents of my son's bowels were not exempt from the effects of oxidation, either) there it was--my lucky birthday penny just waiting for me!

Even better? An entire box of disinfecting wipes revealed the icing on the (proverbial birthday) cake: my birthday penny was indeed minted in 1984, the very year I was born.  Coincidentally, it was one of the few areas of the penny that wasn't rendered unrecognizable by stomach acid. I'll spare you a picture.

During my frantic Mother of the Year Google search, I saw a forum with a few comments from crazy moms who said they had cleaned and saved their kid's penny for the scrapbook. I think I might become one of those crazy moms. I might have to reserve a few extra pages of the scrapbook, though, to record the rest of the story for posterity as well. After all, I want my endearing middle child to always remember his perfect design for an exciting Friday night. Future girlfriends, beware!

So now that you know (and maybe wish you didn't), it's decision time! Shall we keep the current title? Or swap it out for one of the MANY other options? Feel free to cast a vote...or recommend your own, since you know I'll have to fill some space in that scrapbook!

A Fork in the Road...

If you come to a fork in the road, take it. -Yogi Berra

The time has come to make some changes around here.
And get personal.
And professional.

You in?

Let me explain. For as long as I can remember I've walked around writing stuff in my head. In the same way mathematicians love to solve equations (which I will never understand), I delight in putting words together. Or taking someone else's words and arranging them in a more delectable way. (Yes, my friends, I am that weirdo who actually enjoyed proofing your English paper). Poetry, prose, doesn't matter. I love to read it and write it all. The fact that I can combine so many other passions within my writing--helping others, exploring culture, bragging about my kids, sharing life lessons--is a pretty awesome bonus. You can't do that with math, can you?

It's been a long-time dream of mine to take the passions I share through writing and turn it into a real live career. (Akin to the starving artist...but with pen and paper...and a sugar daddy). But let's be honest: there's only so much room in professional writing for twenty embedded videos of my 10-month-old genius. So, as I move forward with my writing, the roads will diverge in two equally great ways. Home Sweet Hjelmstad will still exist, but I'm grabbing the bull by the horns and becoming...dunt dunt duh...a multiple-personality blogger! Or, in more professional terms, pursuing the (imperfect yet) serious writer in me, beginning with a new professional blog and Facebook page: Positively (Im)Perfect!
